TOWN GIRLS REACH ANOTHER CUP FINAL
Swindon Town Ladies U14's reached their third Oxford
Girls League Cup Final in four seasons after a battling 2-1 extra time victory
at Bloxham on Saturday.
The Adver's Young Team of the Year nominees had to dig deep
and were indeed just 20 seconds from going out of the competition they won last
season.
The first half was a scrappy affair with neither of the
teams able to cope with the highly blustery conditions which made any type of
constructive football an impossibility.
This would not be a day for pretty football.
Half-Time:
Bloxham 0 - 0 Swindon Town
The second half was played in the same vain and Bloxham
went ahead half way through the half as a through ball found its way to Mali
Minchin who slotted her shot past Rhiannon Brown in the Swindon goal.
Swindon pushed forward looking for an equaliser going
close with efforts from Alice Telling and Stephanie Drewett but the Bloxham
defence stood firm, just as it looked as the holders were on their way out of
the cup Swindon won a corner which was whipped in by Jessica Graham and with
the home defence static Alice Telling swooped in to head the ball in to an
unguarded net.
This reaction by both teams as the full - time whistle
was blown by the ref less than 10 seconds after the restart showed the
difference one goal makes with the home side visibly deflated and Town
celebrating as they had got out of jail by the skin on their teeth.
Full - Time:
Bloxham 1 - 1 Swindon Town
The team talk in preparation for the period of extra time
was "let’s not get excited and let’s re-group and get back to basics"
With all the effort they had exerted during the match
Bloxham struggled to cope with Town's fitness and Swindon started to find space
all over the pitch and finally were able to play the passing game they are used
to.
The reds almost took the lead in the first period of
extra time when Jess Graham's low shot struck the bottom of the left hand post with
the Bloxham keeper stranded.
Half - Time (Extra Time) : Bloxham 1 - 1 Swindon Town
Swindon continued to press in the second period of extra
time and eventually took the lead when a fine through ball from Jess Graham
found Amy Jolliffe on the edge of the Bloxham penalty area, with great
composure she skipped past the Bloxham defender and drew the keeper of her
line...when other forwards would have panicked and took an early shot Amy took
the ball around the keeper and rolled the ball into an empty net.
This was harsh for a Bloxham team who put their all in to
the match and had no more to give, it also showed what great spirit the Town
team process and their never say die attitude which saw them through the day.
Full - Time (Extra Time) : Bloxham
1 - 2 Swindon Town
